Hula Kahiko Ma Helumoa

The impressive performance schedule features halau hula (hula schools) that have competed at the annual Merrie Monarch Festival and showcase a variety of traditions unique to their own halau. Every Saturday, hula kahiko is showcased with a halau hula and their olapa (dancers) performing traditional hula where drumming and chanting are the accompaniment. March – Na Pualei O Likolehua, under the direction of kumu hula Niulii Heine April – Halau Hula O Namakahulali, under the direction of kumu hula Shirley Recca May – Halau Na Pua A Lei, under the direction of Twyla Mendez June – Halau Kilipohe Na Lei Lehua, under the direction of A. Liko Cooke and Sky Gora July – Na Lei O Ka Iwa Haa I Ka Lani, under the direction of Tatiana Tseu Fox August – Halau Mahala Ilima, under the direction of Mapuana de Silva September – Hula Halau O Kamuela, under the direction of Kauionalani Kamanao and Kunewa Mook October – Halau o Kaululauae, under the direction of Mikiala Lidstone November – Ka Hula O Kealamailani, under the direction of TeHani Gonzado December – Halau Hula O Kawaihoomalu, under the direction of Ku Souza The FREE hula kahiko performances take place in The Royal Grove from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
